How the numbers are worked out

Aida count is the number of stitches per inch. Divide the pattern width in stitches by the count to get inches: 100 stitches on 14-count Aida is 100 ÷ 14 = 7.1 inches (18.1 cm). Evenweave and linen are usually stitched over two threads, so 28-count evenweave gives the same size as 14-count Aida.

Add a border on every side for hooping, framing or finishing. Three inches is the usual allowance for framed pieces; small ornaments can use less.

A DMC skein holds 8 metres of six-strand floss. The skein estimate assumes each full cross stitch uses two diagonals on the front and two runs on the back, plus extra thread for starting, ending and travelling. Real use varies with how you stitch, so buy one extra skein of colors you use a lot.
